4-H tonight update

Hi All, I am so sorry for the late notice. This week we have had several trimester projects due, the STEM School fundraiser and it looks like I will be taking an impromptu trip to Glenwood Spring for the Colorado Leadership Camp middle school conference this weekend. So, I am now a little overwhelmed. To top matters off, I have left my phone at home today. I will try and reach you all by email canceling the meeting for tonight. I am so sorry.

The December 9th meeting will be held at the church. Our topic will be baking. We will have one or more extension agents on hand to answer 4-H related questions while we do our activity there as well. Please bring you favorite cookie recipe and ingredients, or a batch of ready made dough. We will have lots of ingredients as well for you to mix something on the fly. We will bake cookies on site, and send some dough home with kids as well.

The Humane Society will have it's emergency response vehicle in the Westminster Police Dept. parking lot at 11am tomorrow for an open house. The PD is located at 9110 Yates St. Westminster. I guess the vehicle is pretty cool to walk through. If you are off of work and school tomorrow and want to swing by, I will be out there at 11am. We are still on for the Museum trip on the 27th. Please meet in the front of the building. See you there!

Field Trip!

Hi everyone,

If stir crazy kids are driving you nuts after Turkey Day- I managed to secure a FREE (mostly) field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The field trip will take place on Sunday, November 27th at 11am. The first 50 kids will get in free. I then get 5 free adults, or one per 10 kids. If you are a free adult you must help manage the herd :0) Additional adults will get a discounted rate of $5.

We will begin at the T-Rex Encounter and go from there through most of the museum. I will let the kids set the pace. I will be highlighting some 4-H projects that apply to each section of the museum. You are welcome to go with our group or split off on your own. Members of any 4-H club and their guests are welcome, but please RSVP to me at vburney@cityofwestminster.us

Feel free to bring a sack lunch or purchase snacks at the on site cafe. Our group will break for lunch after T-Rex. Please wear any 4-H garb you have.

For our club, this will take the place of our second November meeting (which falls on Thanksgiving).

Meeting tomorrow

Hi Everyone,
given the weather, I think we will meet at the church tomorrow for pizza making and a Halloween craft. The church address is 5511 W. 136th Ave, in case you need it again. We will supply dough, sauce and cheese along with crafts. Please bring any favorite toppings that you like.

Jeff has found an awesome park in Superior that has a large fire pit for hot dogs and s'mores. This would be great option if the weather improves and doesn't leave the park too wet. So that is an option too. Let me know what you think!

Meeting ideas

Hi Everyone! I just checked and Rock Creek Pumpkin Patch closes at 6pm, so that will not work for our meeting next week. I will continue looking at area pumpkin patches to see if I can find another one to meet our needs, or we can switch days. Otherwise, I am open for ideas. Let me know if anyone thinks of something great! Feel free to email me at vburney@cityofwestminster.us

Sept. 16th Kick off to the new year!

Hello All,

Our first planning meeting went well. Here are some initial decisions.

  • We will usually meet 2 Thursdays a month. In October, we will have 2 "Explore It" meetings. Starting in November, we will move to one "Explore It" and one "Do It" meeting a month. "Explore It" meeting will be done as a group. We will explore interesting topics that kids may not have been exposed to before, or topics they would like to learn more about. "Do It" meeting will involve members working on projects more in depth as individuals or small groups, with adult support. Our club will determine the "Explore It" topics as a group, where as individuals decide what they would like to work on in their "Do It" meetings. Cloverbuds, ages 7 and under may have additional activities available to them in both types of meetings.

  • The next meeting will be a "Welcome to 4-H" informational showcase Thursday, Sept 29th at 6:30 at Good News Church 5511 W. 136th Ave. We will have lots of project examples, small animals, photos, etc. to show folks what 4-H is all about. Please come and get ideas for this coming year. This is a great meeting for guests and people just wanting to check us out. Everyone is welcome.

  • October meetings will be Oct 13th at 6:30. Our topic will be "forestry". We will talk about trees and do an activity or related craft. This location is TBD as we may be out looking at trees, weather depending. Our 2nd meeting will be Oct. 27th We will be working on cermic masks and carving pumpkins or visiting the pumpkin patch as a group. Let me know which you would prefer. Location also TBD.

We are doing some light fundraising. All proceeds go 100% baack out to stuff for the kids. We are selling "World's Finest" candy bars for $1. They come in a box of 50. Let me know if you would like a few bars or a box to sell.

Don't forget about the lego robotics meeting Sept. 20th at the Fairgrounds, if you are interested.

Fall Updates

HI Everyone! We have had a crazy fair season showing in both Denver County Fair and Adams County Fair, but lots of fun! We are headed to State Fair this weekend for Creative Cooks, poultry and rabbits.

A few notes before we go:

4-H has started their "Revolution for Responsibility". This program encourages young people to do great things and make a difference in their community and their world! I will be including some great video links in a future post.

  • First shooting sports practice is Sept. 12th @ Dept. of Wildlife

  • Our first fall meeting is Sept. 15 at the Tanklefsky's house at 6:30pm. This will be a planning meeting with a quick 4-H craft. Friends and guests are welcome! Please send me an email for the address. This will be our only Sept. meeting. Normal meetings will resume in October.

  • Please think about the topics you would like to explore this year. We will have several sample projects for everyone to look at during the meeting.

  • We will also have some project loner kits available for club use. So far we have:

Waterbath canner and accessories; two model rockets; and basic insect collection kit for entomology, pirate ship and butterfly 3-D cake pans and some scrap booking stuff.

I have also picked up lots of sewing patterns and clearance fabric for sewing projects. Patterns are $1 each and fabric is $1/ yard. Money will go into a fund for more supplies.

Please let me know if you have any kits or supplies to offer on loan for other members or for a club meeting.

I would also like to start a list of what projects members are doing this year (no obligation-LOL), so we can match up kids with similar interests and find an adult project leader for them. Please email or respond below. Thanks everyone!!!!

We are looking forward to a great year!

Creative Cooks

Creative Cooks is a contest that occurs every February in Adams County. The kids may work alone or in teams. Kids must prepare a theme with a table setting and centerpiece, a menu and one dish from their menu (teams need 2). Kids may dress in costume and have a backdrop, etc as long as it fits in a 4x4 space. 4-H members are interviewed by the judge and provide information on food safety, food prep and nutrition. Here are some pictures from this year's Creative Cooks. Congratulations to Madison Burney- Res Champion Intermed. for her "under the Sea" theme and Arianna Burney and Allie Huppert- Champion Jr. Team for their Little House on the Prairie theme. Adrianna and Allie will be representing us at State Fair this year. The Cloverbuds had a great time at the "Princess table".

Sewing workshop

We had a great sewing workshop #2. Kids continued to work on their chosen patterns. This is a workshop put on by the County. We have learned a ton and they have done a wonderful job.

Kitchen Chemistry

We had a great time at our kitchen chemistry meeting. The kids used dyes of every color and made lots of stuff bubble and fizz. We learned about tie dye milk, acids and bases and yeast.

Stock Show

We had a great time at Stock Show. We had 3 families attend the rodeo, draft horses and Dancing Horses.
