January Fun, Creative Cooks and NWSS!

Hello, if you are new to 4-H and/or our club, please scroll down to the previous post to learn a little more about us!

January Meetings
While kids are on winter break, you may begin thinking about the upcoming 4-H year.  In order to cut down on the rush before fair, think about doing some work on your project now.  Here are some ideas:
·         All gardening units require a tri-fold poster on a gardening topic of your choice.  Begin to research and make your poster.  You can also work on your garden plan for spring.
·         If you are thinking about entering baking- find a recipe and practice baking.  Don't forget to take pictures through the process.  You can use those in your record book later.
·         All cake decorating units require some practice cakes- make one over the holidays.  Don't forget to take a picture for your record book.
·         If you are thinking about sewing- find a pattern and fabric.  Pre-wash your fabric.  If you are comfortable, you can cut out your pieces.  Otherwise, watch for an upcoming workshop in February.
·         Ceramics- find a piece of greenware and clean it.  Take it to be fired.
·         Animal projects- take pictures with your animals and of you doing animal activities.  Don't forget to keep receipts of animal expenses.
·         Shooting sports- a tri-fold poster is required for shooting sports.  Think of a topic to begin researching and work on your poster.

Jan 3rd:  Creative Cooks Workshop   9am-1pm   Adams County Fairgrounds in the main extension office.  Please RSVP to me ASAP and I will get money and names to Julia today. My 2 oldest kids will be attending the workshop.  Even if you do not intend to do the contest, it is great fun to learn about garnishes and decorative napkin folding, etc.
Creative Cooks Workshop
Would you like to learn more about the Creative Cooks Contest?  Join us for a hands-on Creative Cooks workshop on Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 9am to 1pm in the Extension Office Meeting Rooms.  During the workshop, you will be able to get help with  your ideas for Creative Cooks, get ideas for garnishes, learn more about nutrition and have some fun!  The cost of the workshop is $5 per person.  Please RSVP, with money, to Julia by Friday, December 28, 2012.  Checks can be made out to the Adams County 4-H Home Ec Committee.  Participants are asked to bring a small cutting board, paring knife, cloth napkin and apron.  See you on January 3!  Here are some pics from previous years:

Creative Cooks will be held February 23rd at the Adams County Fairgrounds.  It is a super fun cooking contest where you pick a theme and make a dish.  Kids may participate as individuals or in pairs. Please call or email if you would like more information.
I will be at a CCW class from 10-2 but I will be available in the morning to get everyone checked in and off and running.

January 10th:  Business meeting- only meeting in January.  This meeting is for new families that may need help with enrollment and project selection.  Returning families are also welcome if they have questions about the above topics and/or need tip sheets and other materials for the coming year.  Brand new families are welcome if they have questions about 4-H and need to get started.  6:30 pm at the church.  I will have a laptop there to facilitate enrollment.  Please email child's name and project list if you would like to receive and info packet and record books that night.

National Western Stock Show - we will be attending the Stock Show on Thursday, Jan 24th.  We will be going to the Family Rodeo at 10:30am and visiting the stock show for the rest of the day.  This would require an absence from school/work for most of us.  Rodeo tickets are $15-$17 and include parking and entrance into the rest of the exhibits.  You do not need separate grounds admission. If you are unable to make that date, I strongly encourage you to visit.  It is an awesome experience.  Groupon is running a stock show ticket special right now for various events, so check it out!

4-H Registration must be done online.  Please go to: https://colorado.4honline.com/Login.aspx?4041306268495252646F2B413D to enroll.  You will need immunization records for the kids, so please have that available before attempting registration.  When it comes time to add the club- we are under "Good News" 4-H.   Projects can be changed for a little while, so you can enroll and then we can help you figure out what projects you would like to start with.  Good first year projects include baking, gardening, cake decorating and decorate your duds/sewing, as well as any animal projects.  However, the sky is the limit, so sign up for whatever looks exciting to you.  You then need to mail or bring a check for $35 per child to the Adams County Extension Office. This fee will be good until Oct 1st, 2013.  Returning Members enrollment deadline is Feb 1st!  New members have until May 1st, but we need you signed up in order to attend workshops, shooting sports, Youth Fest etc.

December meetings

If you are new to 4-H, or to our club- please scroll down to the October post to learn more about us!

December 13th meeting: Gingerbread houses/ ceramics

This will be our last meeting before Christmas.  We will be making Gingerbread (graham cracker) houses with royal frosting.  You are welcome to bring your own gingerbread or kit if you would like to use that instead. The club will provide the graham crackers and frosting, as well as cake decorating supplies.  However, if you have any left over graham crackers from summer s'mores, please bring them too.  Would each family please bring a bag of hard candy or gumdrops or other decorating type candy and a flat surface to take your house home on?  Cardboard wrapped with wax paper works great, or a flat serving dish.  These will be made with royal frosting, so they will last a long time. Thank you!

I will also try to have some fired ornaments to glaze.  I will probably not be able to get these back to you before our next meeting, unless you would like them unfired- my apologies.

December 27th meeting: Kitchen Chemistry
This will be a repeat of last year's very popular, kitchen chemistry.  Please use the following link to sign up to bring various items- 1 or 2 items per family would be really helpful.  Most things should be items you already have around the house.  Thank you!  www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C044DAFA62AA64-kitchen  We will be using sign up genius to get an idea of number of folks attending in the future and/ or help with bringing items for meetings, so please get an account if you do not have one already.  THANK YOU!

Guests and new members are always welcome!

Cheers, Kinza
