Fall/Winter meetings

Hello All,

Here are our scheduled meetings and activities for fall/winter.  Please note I have added many workshops and such on the weekends that may be offered by other entities or the county.  Please join our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/397424847023771/ if you haven’t already.  These workshops will be listed under the “events” page as will the regular meetings (as soon as I find time to add them).  The info in this email will also be posted on the blog:  www.goodnews4h.blogspot.com and  will be on the FB site under “files”.

It looks like we have several new families coming in, so we have tried to make the topics a little more general while everyone get acclimated.  Please know that guests and members of other clubs are always welcome.   So please feel free to forward to anyone interested.   I look forward to seeing everyone again!

I do have a community service opportunity this Sunday at a food bank.  We will be meeting at 9am and then going over to clean and organize.  Please email if interested.  We would love to have you!

Good News 4-H Club 2013 Fall/Winter Meetings

Where: Meetings will typically be held at 5511 W. 136^th Ave at Good News Community Church- unless noted.

Cost: Meetings are free.  Sometimes a small donation is requested.  This will be indicated for certain activities.  Donations are usually $1-3 per child and will result in a take home item for the child. There will be a www.signupgenius.com list for some meetings if many types of supplies are needed.  It would be helpful if each attending family helped with supplies in these instances.

Who: Some meetings require several stations.  It would be helpful if an adult or 12 and over member helped staff these stations.  Stations will be noted at signupgenius. 

Everyone is welcome at all meetings, including guests.  For certain meetings, we would love an RSVP, as that helps me prepare enough supplies.

What: Meeting topics may include lecture or demonstrations, but we mainly try and focus on hands on activities.  Cloverbuds are members 7 and under (as of 12-31-2013).  They are always welcome at regular activities, but they may have additional activities of their own.  We ask that a parent or guardian is present with Cloverbud members.  Tips and Tricks will be a short demo and practice aimed at older member or members interested in that particular subject.  Parents/ guardians are also welcome to try their hand at the skills presented.  Tips and tricks will be presented towards the end of the meeting.

Meeting Topic: Welcome Picnic/ Potluck and Fishing

Meeting Topic: Rockets and Flight- join us as we explore the world of flight.  We will make our own gliders, launch model rockets and learn some rocket terminology.  Bring your own rocket to launch if you have one!

Tips and Tricks: Cake decorating- how to level and crumb frost a cake. Bring a refrigerated, unfrosted single layer cake of your choice and frosting or simply watch a demonstration.

Date: Oct 24^th, 2013

Meeting Topic: The wonderful world of birds- Join us as we learn all about birds.  We will meet a variety of domestic poultry, big and small, a tame house sparrow and hopefully, our resident falconer will stop by with a bird of prey.  We will also have a poultry showmanship demonstration and kids can practice.  We will also discuss bird watching. Do you have a bird?  If so, feel free to bring it-and give the group an introduction to your avian friend.

Tips and Tricks: Sewing- understanding a basic pattern.  Bring a pattern of your own to decipher, or watch the demonstration.

Date: Nov 14^th, 2013

Meeting Topic: Baking and Baking experiments- Join us for a great night of baking and baking experiments.  Younger kids and beginning bakers will mix and pour, older and experienced bakers will learn more advanced techniques and perform some experiments.

Tips and Tricks: Cake decorating- leaf and star tip techniques.

Meeting Topic: Ceramics and Robotics- Join us for a fun evening where you can paint your own ceramic ornaments and make a robot with stuff you can find around the house.  Spend the evening at one station, or check them all out!

Tips and Tricks: sewing- 5/8 inch hem and seam finishing

County Fair Results

Hi Everyone,
We had a great County Fair!

We had several of our club kids participate in county fair with amazing results!  We are so very proud of our club members.  Here are some preliminary results- I know I have a few errors, so please bear with me as I get them finalized.  Good Luck to all of our State Fair Qualifiers!

Awards explanation:

• A project is given a blue (highest quality), red or white designation.

• From the blues, a champion and reserve champion may be awarded. Champion projects are eligible for state fair.

• From the Champions, a Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Project may be chosen.

Animal Projects: 
Most animal projects are awarded by breed, sex and age- some are further divided by color.  For example, your rabbit can win best junior mini lop buck.  The winners of these groups then compete for best of breed (BOB), and best opposite sex of breed (BOS).  Best of breed winners then go up for Best in Show (BIS), or Champion Bird of Show.  Poultry and dogs have a category between best of breed and best in show- which is a best in group.  Complicated enough for you?

May- June 2013 Meetings

Welcome to Good News 4-H!  Here are our meetings for the next month.  Guests are always welcome.  It is too late for  NEW members over the age of 8 to participate in County Fair for 2013, however, you are still welcome to participate in our club activities through the summer.  Children 5-7 may still participate in Adams County Fair in the "mini" division, which is non-competitive and may showcase their awesome creations on our Cloverbud table at fair.  Of course, they are also welcome at any of our summer activities too.  There is no enrollment fee due until Oct 2013 (should you choose to continue at that time).  There may be a small donation request per activity from the club.  It is noted below.  If no donation is stated- activities are free.

Here is the kickoff for weekly meetings.  Please remember, meetings are optional. Please make what you can and don't feel guilty about the rest.  Guests are always welcome.  Simply let me know a number so I can plan enough supplies.

 

 tomorrow 4-H meeting will be at the church (5511 W. 136th Ave, Broomfield) at 6:30.  Please plan on grubby shirts as we will be making friendship bracelets and using dye on them.  We will also have tiny chickens for poultry showmanship practice and kids are welcome to bring any other projects they would like to work on.  remember- we do have a full kitchen at the church if needed.

 

 

Next week- May 30th We will be doing tie dye outside the church, if the weather is nice.  Please wear grubby clothing.  If it will be raining, we will still hold a meeting but we will be doing a different activity.  The club will be providing white T shirts to dye.  Please email a specific size if you care.  Otherwise we will have some adult med- large and a few youth sizes on hand.  Feel free to bring any other items you may like to dye including pillow cases, socks, etc.  Kids may work on their 4-H projects instead if they choose.  I am going to try and be at the church by 5:30.  You are welcome to come early if you wish.  I could use a few adult or older kid helpers at each dye or banding station.

 

Tie Dye projects will be going home wet, in a plastic bag.  They will need to sit overnight at least.  Please remind your child not to pitch them into the washer with other clothing (at least for the first wash :0), as this will result in much more dyed clothing then you bargained for!  A $2 donation per shirt is appreciated.  That is what we will have to pay for them.  Money will replenish our fundraising account. 

 

 

June 6th - Offsite- Summer Picnic and Fishing

We will be meeting at EB Rains Park- across from the Northglenn Rec Center, very close to 120th and I-25.

I will be trying to book a picnic pavilion.  They are very reasonable.  More info on which pavilion to follow.  I think we should potluck, if you guys want to.  Kids can fish.  Pond will be stocked June 1st for the kids' fishing derby.    I have a few poles and lots and lots of tackle.  So, even if you do not have equipment, bring kids down to fish!  Please sign up for potluck here: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C044DAFA62AA64-summer

 

June 13th-  Demonstrations - any child showing at fair needs to do at least one demonstration.  We would also like to encourage all of our members to practice this vital skill. This is your chance!  Kids can make cookies, plant a seed, fire off a rocket or whatever they can think of.  Demonstrations could also be physical skills such as "how to shoot a free throw." April 25th Meeting

Hi All,

Here is the meeting topic for April 25th:  Grains and Breads of the World!

Pse feel free to bring a favorite, something new, or something that represents your heritage. Your child should have a small paragraph they can share with the group about their bread(s). Thank you!

We will be learning about the big 3 grains (corn, rice and wheat) and about the breads of the world.  Please use the following link to sign up for one or more breads to share with the group.  You may make or purchase.  It doesn't have to be a ton, as we will cut little bites of everything for everyone. Please have your child prepare a little paragraph about their bread(s).  Feel free to bring a favorite or bring a bread which represents your heritage.   PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOUR CHILD HAS FOOD ALLERGIES OR IF THEY ARE GLUTEN INTOLERANT.

Welcome to Good News 4-H!  We are an Adams County Club meeting at Good News Church at 5511 W. 136th Ave.  We are always accepting new members, boys and girls of all ages.  Our specialties are poultry, rabbits, gardening, cake decorating, baking, food preservation, dogs and pocket pets but we support all projects, including horse and large livestock.  We are always seeking parent or volunteer project leaders.  Cloverbuds meet with the traditional club members but may have modified activites.

We typically meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 6:30.  Meetings last until about 8pm.  Please subscribe to the blog for updates and feel free to email me with questions.  We also schedule special events occasionally on the weekends. 

Please feel free to come to any of our meetings or activities to see if we are the right club for you!  We would love to have you.  An RSVP is appreciated so we can prepare enough supplies.

4-H Registration must be done online.  Please go to: https://colorado.4honline.com/Login.aspx?4041306268495252646F2B413D to enroll.  You will need immunization records for the kids, so please have that available before attempting registration.  When it comes time to add the club- we are under "Good News" 4-H.   Projects can be changed for a little while, so you can enroll and then we can help you figure out what projects you would like to start with.  Good first year projects include baking, gardening, cake decorating and decorate your duds/sewing, as well as any animal projects.  However, the sky is the limit, so sign up for whatever looks exciting to you.  You then need to mail or bring a check for $35 per child to the Adams County Extension Office. This fee will be good until Oct 1st, 2013.  Returning Members enrollment deadline is Feb 1st!  New members have until May 1st, but we need you signed up in order to attend workshops, shooting sports, Youth Fest etc.

April 4-H News

HI All,

Sorry I have been out of commission here for a few weeks.  We were out of town and then frantically car shopping for the vehicle we lost in the accident just prior to leaving on our trip- sigh.

I am setting up a couple of field trips for April- Happy Spring!!!!!  I know April and May have the potential to be busy for many folks with Spring sports and end of school stuff.  So just come to what you are able to and what is interesting for you.

Here is the currently proposed schedule:

Note: Archery Practice has begun on Monday nights at AdCo Fairgrounds.  You can go and use their equipment for the first practice or two.  This will allow you to determine what is an appropriate size bow for your 4-Her.

Shotgun, .22 and air rifle/handgun have already begun as well.  Please contact me if you need more details.

We will be learning how to read plant tags, select appropriate plants for Colorado gardens, and speak to an employee about what it is like to work in a nursery.  Please bring your workbook if you are in the gardening project.  I have placed a few of level 1 and 2 on order.  They should be here by then if you are in need of one.

April 15th- Meat Quality Assurance- Boulder County Fairgrounds- YOU MUST ATTEND AN MQA TO BE ABLE TO SHOW ANY ANIMAL AT FAIR EXCEPT CAT, DOG or POCKET PET.  If you have already attended an MQA at Adams County, you do NOT need to attend this one.  If you cannot attend this night, let me know ASAP sp I can get you alternative dates and locations.

Boulder County MQA Training:

Monday, April 15 from 4 to 7 pm

Boulder County Fairgrounds, Exhibit Building

Members will learn animal husbandry, nutrition, safety, product quality practices and more from over 10 sta-tions. Members earn their MQA certification by passing a multiple test that reviews the station topics.

Families may arrive any time between 4 and 6 p.m. to start the training. Training takes about an hour to com-plete, more if you are also testing for PQA certification for the Market Swine Project.

Parents are encouraged to participate in the learning.

This farm is located just north of the Orchard Crossing Shopping Center in Westminster

Feb 21st Meeting

Hello Everyone,

We will be meeting tomorrow and our topic will be gardening. 6:30 at 5511 W. 136th Ave

We will be looking at planning a garden, cool weather and warm weather crops, companion planting and actually planting some seeds.  We will be providing some peat pots, seeds and soil.  Please bring a special pot or container if you would like to plant it with something, otherwise, you are welcome to supplies provided. 

If weather is really nasty- we will cancel the meeting.  IF WE CANCEL- I will have an email out by 3pm.

February Information

Hi Everyone,

Just a reminder about the meeting this Thursday, February 7th, @6:30 at Good News Church -5511 W. 136th Avenue.  We have a great line up of quilters, spinners, knitters and scrap bookers.  Please come by and see out great Heritage Arts showcase. I will have information on each Heritage Arts 4-H project if you are interested in taking the projects further, otherwise- come and have fun!  If you would like to work on a scrap page (parents too) please bring a couple photos to work with.  We will provide supplies. We will have a Creative Memories consultant there to speak to also. PLEASE feel free to bring or invite guests as this is a great meeting for hands on fun!

I did not make it to shooting sports last night due to fun filled case of pink eye :0(  However, we do plan on attending the next one, as well as the shooting 101 class.

The Colorado Home and Garden Show begins this weekend. This is a great opportunity to see some exciting garden ideas and attend some lectures on gardening. http://www.gardeningcolorado.com/garden/colorado-garden-home-show This Sat and Sunday, there is also a crazy cool cake show taking place at the Home and Garden Show, and it is included in admission.  More information can be found here: http://www.coices.org/denvercakeshow.html  If you go, please take pictures.  The pictures can be used in your record books later, for cake/cupcake decorating or for gardening. 

Reminder-

Feb 12th/ 26th- Robotics Meeting    7-8:30 @ AdCo Fairgrounds

Feb 16th at 9am-12pm: Shooting Sports 101 (archery included) will be held at the AdCo Fairgrounds- no charge

At the same time, there will be a Sewing workshop, also at the Fairgrounds- no charge as well.  Kids should bring a pattern and their fabric.  Pins, scissors and an iron are helpful.  Helpers will show kids how to read, pin and cut out a pattern.  If your sewing project is beyond this stage, bring your machine and project to work on with guided assistance.  If you need help selecting a pattern, get with me.  Kids do not have to enter a sewing project in fair, to attend the workshop. Any sewing item is fine: clothing, pillows, stuffed animals, etc.  Parents may stay or drop off.

I will be attending the shooting workshop, while the kids are in the sewing workshop. Other parents are welcome to do the same.

Feb 23rd: 8:30 in the Dome @ AdCo Fairgrounds - Creative Cooks Contest  if you have not received an entry form in the mail, please get one from me at the Thursday meeting.  Entries are due by Feb 15th

                           1pm-4pm  Cat Project Day @Red Cross Building AdCo Fairgrounds - learn all about cats, cat showmanship and cat requirements for Fair.

There are lots of horse workshops, demos and shows  in February and a swine seminar on Feb 11th  - let me know if you would like more information.
